Chilly weather couldn’t keep them away from the town’s fifth staging of a centuries-old festival symbolising light, hope and harmony.
They were treated to a feast of music and dance, fantastic food from around the globe and a spectacular Bollywood-style firework finale.
Organiser Kash Patel – who also heads the team that delivers the town’s renowned Mela – said he was delighted by the town’s embracing of a truly multicultural celebration of culture, community and togetherness.
Diwali – also known as the Festival of Lights – is an ancient festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists, symbolising the victory of light over darkness.
Kash said: “Diwali is open to everyone, and clearly demonstrates the inclusiveness and cultural cohesiveness that are right at the heart of Middlesbrough’s identity.
“The atmosphere in Centre Square was incredible as people of all faiths came together to enjoy vibrant music, energetic dance performances, explosive fireworks and the joyful spirit of Diwali.”
National Lottery funding plays a crucial role in supporting events such as Middlesbrough Diwali, alongside funding from Arts Council England and backing from sponsors including Unison.
Kash added: “Without the support of The National Lottery, the kind of arts and cultural events that I produce could not go ahead - it plays a crucial part in making things like Diwali Middlesbrough a reality.
“It’s all about the triumph of love over hate, light over darkness and I think it’s more important than ever that festivals like this are celebrated across all cultures.
“That’s why we’re already planning for next year’s event which I’m confident will be bigger and better than ever.”
Councillor Philippa Storey, Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor and Executive member for Education & Culture, added: “Diwali is the sort of world-class event that symbolises what Middlesbrough and its people are all about, and it’s here to stay.
“The turn-out for this brilliant multicultural and family-friendly celebration speaks volumes about the unbreakable unity and inspiring diversity that characterise our communities.
“Congratulations to Kash and everyone involved for a spectacular success, and here’s to Diwali in Middlesbrough 2026.”
