Sofa fly-tipper arrested and hit with court fine

Published April 02, 2026 By

A fly-tipper who dumped a sofa on a public space in Middlesbrough has been arrested and hit with a court fine.

Tyler Belton was caught on film dumping the item under the cover of darkness on a grassed area at Miniott Walk, Hemlington last August.

The sofa was found by a Middlesbrough Council Environment Enforcement Officer the following day, with Belton identified from footage captured by a camera installed nearby.

The sofa was subsequently removed by the Council’s Fly Tipping Squad.

Belton failed to attend interviews in September and could not be contacted at his home or work addresses, and was therefore arrested ahead of this week’s hearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court where he admitted the offence.

The 22-year-old, of Myton Walk, Middlesbrough, was fined £120 with a £48 victim surcharge and ordered to pay the Council’s costs of £643, making a total of £811.

Councillor Ian Blades, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Neighbourhoods, said: “There’s no excuse for this sort of behaviour, and this case sends out a clear message that those responsible can expect to find themselves seriously out of pocket and with a criminal record.

“Fly-tipping is lazy and antisocial and blights whole neighbourhoods, and we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to stamp it out.

“I’m grateful to our officers for their diligent work in bringing this offender to justice, and to the courts for backing our stance on behalf of law-abiding residents.”
