Protect Your Health: Understanding Prostate Cancer

Published October 23, 2025 By

As part of the Cancer Connect Project, CVFM Radio is encouraging everyone—especially men in our community—to learn more about prostate cancer, how to protect their health, and the importance of early detection.

 Why Awareness Matters

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with around 1 in 8 men diagnosed during their lifetime. It mainly affects men over 50, but Black men and those with a family history are at higher risk.

The good news is that when prostate cancer is found early, treatment is often very successful, and many men live long, healthy lives after diagnosis. Awareness and regular check-ups can make all the difference.

Recognising the Signs and Symptoms

Prostate cancer often develops slowly, and in the early stages, many men don’t notice any symptoms. However, it’s important to be aware of possible warning signs, especially as you get older.
Contact your GP if you notice:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination.

  • A weak or interrupted urine flow.

  • Needing to urinate more often, especially at night.

  • A feeling that your bladder isn’t emptying fully.

  • Blood in your urine or semen.

  • Pain or discomfort in the lower back, hips, or pelvis.

These symptoms don’t always mean cancer—it could be an enlarged prostate or another condition—but it’s best to get checked.

Who Is Most at Risk?

While any man can develop prostate cancer, certain factors increase your risk:

  • Age: Most cases occur in men over 50.

  • Ethnicity: Black men have roughly double the risk compared to white men.

  • Family history: Having a father or brother with prostate cancer increases your risk, especially if they were diagnosed under 60.

  • Genetic factors: Inherited gene changes, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, can increase risk.

Main Causes and Contributing Factors

The exact cause of prostate cancer isn’t known, but it’s linked to changes in cell growth within the prostate gland. A mix of genetics, hormones, and lifestyle factors—such as diet and exercise—can influence your likelihood of developing it.

How to Reduce Your Risk

While you can’t change your age, ethnicity, or family history, there are steps you can take to protect your prostate health:

  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Stay active—aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise a week.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Limit alcohol and avoid smoking.

  • Talk to your GP about prostate checks, especially if you’re over 50 or have higher risk factors.

When to Contact Your GP

If you notice any urinary or pelvic symptoms, or if you’re concerned about your prostate health, don’t wait—speak to your GP. They may offer a PSA blood test or refer you for further tests to rule out any serious problems.

Remember, the earlier prostate cancer is found, the easier it is to treat.

Supporting Each Other

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is about more than just information—it’s about supporting men living with prostate cancer, celebrating survivors, and remembering loved ones.

At CVFM Radio, through the Cancer Connect Project, we’re proud to raise awareness, share information, and encourage open conversations about men’s health.

By learning the signs, getting regular checks, and supporting awareness campaigns, we can all play a part in saving lives.

If you or someone you know has questions or concerns about prostate cancer, contact your GP or visit NHS.uk/prostate-cancer for more information.
