Fostering Team in Fundraising Hike for Ruby

Published July 11, 2019 By

BIG-hearted fundraisers from Middlesbrough's fostering community are hitting the road in a good cause at the weekend.

Foster carers will be joined by members of Middlesbrough Council's Fostering Team on the 36-mile trek to Whitby on Saturday, July 13.

Setting off from Middlesbrough Town Hall, they're hoping to raise £500 towards the £150,000 cost of sending Ruby George abroad for treatment for a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer.

The two-year-old was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in December, 2018 and still has 18 months' of treatment ahead of her, including stem cell transplants, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

Following this, Ruby will need to travel abroad to have further treatment to reduce her chances of relapsing, and significantly increase her chances of survival.

This treatment is only available in the US, but is showing very promising results in children with the same diagnosis.

Family Placement Team Assistant Team Manager Gareth Bennett said: "Ruby is a friend's daughter and we wanted to do something to support her to get her to her target for this life-changing treatment abroad.

"That will give her the best chance of fighting and beating this horrible illness, so any donation, big or small, will make a real difference."
