Hair and beauty business Guido’s has traded in the town since the 1960s after being launched by Guido Battista.
Guido’s son Mauro and daughter Nicola now oversee the separate men’s and women’s salons on Princes Road.
Mauro said: “The grants have helped us enormously from both a security and energy efficiency point of view.
“First impressions are massively important and this has helped as we have high standards and do like to keep a nice salon.
“Customers have said the ladies’ salon looks beautiful and we’re really pleased.”
Guido’s has traded on Princes Road since 1973 but the family business goes back even further - Mauro’s father first traded on Russel Street in 1961.
Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke visited Mauro after work was completed to replace the door and shopfront on the women’s salon and improve doors and windows at the men’s.
Council grants contributed to the project after the Mayor created the scheme to help businesses with the upkeep of their units.
Other hair and beauty businesses have also benefited alongside cafes, florists and hospitality venues.
Mayor Cooke said: “Guido’s is a famous name in our town and the work they’ve had done will help them keep providing a brilliant service.
“We launched the grant scheme to help business owners with the cost of improvement projects and many are now complete or under way across town.
“It’s all about improving the look and feel of business premises to support our local economy.”
