The young person – who cannot be named because of their age – is now barred from areas of Middlesbrough and Guisborough in a bid to curb their behaviour.
Middlesbrough Council’s Neighbourhoods Team and Redcar & Cleveland Council’s antisocial behaviour team joined forces to secure a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) as part of an ongoing crackdown against antisocial behaviour.
Working in partnership with Cleveland Police and Youth Services, the teams made repeated attempts to engage with the youth, but they refused to change their behaviour.
A successful application - supported by compelling evidence from Council Neighbourhood Safety Wardens and CCTV – saw the CBO granted this week at Teesside Magistrates’ Court.
As part of the order, the youth is prohibited from entering specific areas of east Middlesbrough, Middlesbrough town centre and Guisborough.
The youth is also prohibited from using a face covering or from causing upset, annoyance or distress to any person.
Any breaches of the order could see the young person detained in a Young Offenders’ Institution.
Councillor Ian Blades, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “This sort of behaviour can blight entire neighbourhoods, and we will take action to stamp it out on behalf of law-abiding members of the community.
“Enforcement action is always a last resort, and I hope this young person will now engage with sort of support available to them.
“I’m also grateful to our Neighbourhoods Team and our partners – with invaluable support from members of the public – for their hard work in securing this important result which I hope acts as a powerful deterrent to others tempted to behave in this way.”
Councillor Adam Brook, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: “This kind of antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated and our officers, working closely with partner agencies, will do what it takes to protect law-abiding residents who simply want to go about their lives in peace.
“Going to the courts to secure this kind of order is never taken lightly but we won’t hesitate to do so when necessary.
“I’d like to congratulate our antisocial behaviour team and their colleagues in partner agencies for their hard work in this case.
“I’d also like to thank all those members of the public who came forward and made their voices heard on behalf of their community.”
