Another Green sweep for town's parks

Published July 21, 2024 By

Middlesbrough’s much loved parks have achieved yet another coveted Green Flag clean sweep.

Albert Park, Fairy Dell, Hemlington Lake, Linthorpe Cemetery, Pallister Park, Stewart Park and Thorntree Park have all landed prestigious 2024 Green Flag Awards.

The award is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces, with Middlesbrough’s magnificent seven joining parks and green spaces across the UK.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

The news that Middlesbrough’s parks and open spaces have once again achieved the accreditation - the international quality mark for parks and green spaces - is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that care for the green space so that visitors and residents alike can enjoy it.

Green Flags are a guarantee to the visiting public that the space is well maintained, has excellent visitor facilities and boasts the highest possible environmental standards.

Councillor Peter Gavigan, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “Our parks and green spaces are some of the jewels in Middlesbrough’s crown, and are hugely valued by all of us as places to relax, exercise and meet friends and family.

“They’re enormously important to both local communities and visitors from further afield, so I am delighted that they have yet again achieved the formal recognition of Green Flag Awards across the board.

“The Awards are also much deserved testament to the tireless work and professionalism of our brilliant Council staff who keep these priceless resources in tip-top condition all year round.”

Paul Todd MBE, Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in Middlesbrough on achieving a Green Flag Award.

“Middlesbrough’s parks are vital green spaces for communities in Middlesbrough to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and they provide important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.

“We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award, everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.

“It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the Green Flag Award standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected.”
