Delight awaits Centre Square Diwali crowds

Published October 30, 2024 By

Delights await crowds heading to one of the highlights of Middlesbrough’s cultural calendar this weekend.

Centre Square will be a blaze of colour and music as the town celebrates Diwali 2024 on Saturday (November 2).

The free feast of family fun runs from noon to 6pm and features live music and dance along with mouth-watering street food, children’s activities, a fun fair and a Bollywood-themed firework finale.

Diwali – also known as the Festival of Lights - celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Highlights of this year’s Middlesbrough event include:

Food

Street vendors from all over the UK offering a wide selection of sweet and savoury delights as well as ethnic fashion and fabrics and a whole host of other stall holders.

Entertainment

Back-to-back main stage entertainment in Centre throughout the day including music by DJ Shai Guy from Bombay Funkadelic fame, live Bollywood Band BollyTunes UK, an amazing traditional Indian drumming group and award-winning headliners Muki and Haseeb Haze.

Funfair

Children’s funfair rides and lots of other free arts and craft activity for the little ones to get involved in.

Fireworks

A spectacular Bollywood-themed fireworks finale will light up the sky.

Free activities

From flower making garlands to rangoli designs, arts and crafts workshops to miniature model making there’s lots of free activities to keep the kids entertained.

Event organiser Kash Patel said: “Diwali is all about coming together with family and friends and embracing the values that Diwali represents such as gratitude, joy and hope for the future.

“It’s an event open to all regardless of faith so come and join us on the day and celebrate our diversity whilst strengthening our unity.”

Diwali in Middlesbrough is produced by the team behind the town’s hugely successful Mela, with support from sponsors including Unison, Thirteen Housing and Teesside University.
