A Middlesbrough Councillor is continuing her drive to help children facing poverty and deprivation.
Councillor Joan McTigue has launched a number of appeals for donations, with support coming from members of the public and fellow councillors.
The charitable drive was inspired by a visit to an orphanage in India more than 40 years ago which left her moved by the levels of deprivation she witnessed.
Following a renewed appeal earlier this year, the Longlands & Beechwood councillor collected several bags of clothes, shoes and toys.
Councillor McTigue delivered the latest collection to the Barnardo’s Donation Centre on the Trunk Road – and she’s keen to hear from others with items to donate.
She said: “In the past I’ve collected unwanted children’s clothes, shoes and toys and arranged shipment to an orphanage in India after seeing first-hand how so many children live, through no fault of their own.
“This time I couldn’t find a company willing to finance the shipment so much of what was given is now with Barnardo’s - a man remembered for what he did for many unwanted and impoverished children.
“People have been incredibly generous in the past, and I’m also very grateful to Councillors Brian Hubbard, Jackie Young, Christine Cooper and Sharon Platt for their donations.
“Items which most of us simply take for granted will make a real difference to so many young lives.”
