Last call for 2025 Ali Brownlee 5k on Sunday, June 1

Published May 29, 2025 By

Runners, families and charity fund-raisers are gearing up for one of the region’s most popular running events – the Thirteen Ali Brownlee 5k and 2k returning on Sunday, June 1 and organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All.

Set against the backdrop of Middlesbrough’s iconic landmarks, the 5k invites participants of all abilities and aged 11+ to run, jog or walk in honour of the legendary broadcaster and long-standing Boro supporter Ali Brownlee.

With a 10.15am start, the route sees runners embark on a course that weaves through the city centre, starting at Centre Square and passing by the infamous Riverside Stadium, before looping back around.

Starting later that day at 11.15am, the 2k provides the perfect opportunity for younger runners and families to get involved and experience the friendly and inclusive atmosphere with a shorter distance.

Both events are staged by not-for-profit organisation Run For All, with the support of Middlesbrough Council and Everyone Active, as well as the event’s title sponsor Thirteen Group.

Matt Forrest, chief executive at Thirteen, said: “It’s fantastic to be supporting Jane Tomlinson’s Run for All for a second year running and we’re delighted to be title sponsor for the Ali Brownlee 5k and 2k.

“We have a continued focus on providing opportunities to proactively enhance health and wellbeing at Thirteen.

“This partnership has allowed us to offer 50 free places for colleagues and customers alike.

“To further support the community, our mobile touchpoint will be in attendance on the day, where members of the public can come along to speak to us about their housing needs, support with employment opportunities, and find out more about the breadth of services we provide.”

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said: “The Ali Brownlee 5k is rightly popular as one of the best events of its kind, not just here in the north east but in the whole country.

“It’s a fitting tribute to one of the great characters of local broadcasting and a tireless advocate for grass roots sport, and many of those taking part will be raising much-needed funds for a host of local charities and good causes.

“It really is an event for everyone, regardless of age or ability, and that’s why it continues to go from strength to strength.”

Tristan Batley-Kyle, Operations Director at Run For All, added: “The Thirteen Ali Brownlee 5k and 2k are more than just runs, but a celebration of community spirit and a tribute to Ali Brownlee – a man who brought so much energy and passion to Middlesbrough.

“We’re honoured to be hosting the event with the support of Thirteen Group, Middlesbrough Council and Everyone Active and look forwards to welcoming participants of all agents to come together on June 1.”
