An area blighted by fly-tipping has been transformed as part of a major clean-up operation in Middlesbrough.
And new CCTV is helping to keep the problem under control, with culprits facing hefty fines and other action if they’re caught on camera.
The alley behind the town’s Kensington Road had become a magnet for dumped household waste, furniture and white goods.
The Council’s Environmental Wardens and fly-tipping Flying Squad blitzed the area last April, removing a staggering 2,180kg of waste.
The new CCTV system was up and running in October and has seen fly-tipping incidents cut from around five a month to less than two, and none in either November or thus far this month (February).
One resident has paid a £400 fixed penalty notice for fly-tipping in the alley, while a number of other residents have received notices under the Environmental Protection Act over the inappropriate presentation of waste.
In a further case a prosecution is being pursued against an individual over the dumping of a white goods item in the alley.
Councillor Janet Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Community Safety, said: “Last year’s clean-up was a fantastic piece of work, and I’m delighted to see we’re continuing to build on that.
“The new CCTV will act as a powerful deterrent, and those still tempted to break the law can rest assured they will be caught and fined.
“Residents also have their part to play, both by taking pride in their local area and by reporting issues to us as they arise.”
