Theatre Lays On Biggest Ever Open-Air Summer Season

By Published April 29, 2022

Middlesbrough Theatre’s biggest ever open-air Theatre Go-Round season takes to the stage this summer.

Featuring a combination of the classics, family entertainment, an interactive murder mystery and Shakespeare, the Middlesbrough Town Hall courtyard will come alive with actors and applauding audiences.

From mid-June through to the end of August, a variety of specialist outdoor theatre companies will present Jane Eyre, Rapunzel, Three Men in a Boat, Awful Auntie by David Walliams, Much Ado about Murder and Much Ado about Nothing.

Theatre-Go-Round was created by Middlesbrough Theatre in 2005 to expand its drama programme to other venues in the borough.

This included the Town Hall Crypt, Hexagon Theatre at Hall Garth School and open-air seasons in MIMA Gardens and Stewart Park. The open-air season was revived after the early lockdowns as a way of bringing theatre back safely, in an outdoor setting.

The programme has gone from strength-to-strength since its initial success and 2022 has a bumper offering.

Heartbreak Productions’ Jane Eyre is a carnival spectacular, complete with astounding acrobats, jaw-dropping jugglers and very special guest: the death-defying escape artist, Jane Eyre. An original adaptation and suitable for age 9 plus.

Immersion Theatre’s loyal audience can get ready to embrace a laugh out loud script, heaps of audience interaction, a host of catchy songs and even a couple of water pistols. Let your hair down at Rapunzel, suitable for age 4 plus.

Giles Shelton expertly takes the helm and carries audiences through the ridiculous tale of men behaving badly in boats in Three Men in a Boat. A rip-roaring barrel of fun suitable for all.

Heartbreak Productions return with David Walliams’ Awful Auntie. Can orphan Stella save the family home from awful Auntie Alberta? Pack a picnic and join in the fun to find out. Suitable for age seven plus.

Don your detective cap with Heartbreak Productions once again to solve some murder-most-fun mysteries.

Five suspects come under the spotlight and the audience will help to find the answers. Much Ado about Murder is suitable for age 10 plus.

Which is not to be confused with Much Ado about Nothing from Folksy Productions.

Shakespeare’s glorious comedy of marriage woes and his wittiest lovers, Beatrice and Benedick, will delight audiences and provide a magical end to an amazing season.

All events will be exclusively in Middlesbrough Town Hall courtyard. Tables and chairs will be provided and refreshments will be available from the Bar and Café. In the event of bad weather, the performance will be moved into the Town Hall Crypt – the show will go on!

  • If you are interested in ideas, radio is way more pure than television. You’re not distracted by somebody’s nose or hair or posture. You can really see how someone thinks and penetrate to the essence of who that person is. – Terry Gross
