Northumbrian Water has started works to locate and repair a leak within a busy carriageway at the junction of Ladgate Lane and Ormesby Road.
Motorists have been advised that they can expect delays as the emergency roadworks.
Temporary multi-way traffic signals are in operation and works are expected to continue until Monday 25 February.
Drivers are advised to use alternative routes if possible.
