The International Afternoon, held at Teesside Golf Club, attracted over 60 people. Entertainment included a stunning Bollywood dance, a performance of drumming by two young men originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and some illustrated information from two Teesside University post-grad students about their home country, Nigeria.
Sara, originally from Iran, told us about her childhood in that country and the difficulties she and others faced, while two Teesside ladies, originally from Afghanistan, told their very moving life stories in that country.
This was followed by a delicious international buffet, while lucky raffle winners enjoyed some very good prizes, kindly donated by a range of people and local companies.
Soroptimism is an international service organisation for women. It has clubs across the world and is linked to the United Nations.
The Middlesbrough club, though small, has a wide range of activities supporting people locally and further afield. For them, the event was about promoting understanding about different nations and cultures.
The Look A Head Cancer Campaign is a Teesside-based charity promoting better knowledge of head and neck cancers, so saving lives.
A profit of over £600 will be shared between the two organisations.
