Trust celebrates national recognition for commitment to patient safety

Published August 17, 2023 By

SOUTH TEES Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has received national recognition for its commitment to patient safety.

The trust has been awarded ‘quality data provider’ status by the National Joint Registry (NJR) for excellence in patient safety standards.

The NJR monitors the performance of hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacement operations to improve clinical outcomes primarily for the benefit of patients, but also to support orthopaedic clinicians and industry manufacturers.

The registry collects high-quality orthopaedic data to provide evidence to support patient safety, standards in quality of care, and overall cost-effectiveness in joint replacement surgery.

Andrew Port, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, said: “The arthroplasty team of ten surgeons carries out over 1,500 joint replacements per year and is recognised as having some of the best outcomes in the country.

“It also has been recently recognised for its excellence in revision knee and hip surgery by being awarded the Major Revision Hub status – one of only 25 hospitals in the country.

“The team is committed to excellence in data quality and collection to drive improvements regionally and nationally in quality outcomes.”

Senior general manager for trauma and orthopaedics, Julie Ohara added: “We are delighted for the team to have received this award.

“This demonstrates patient safety and experience is a consistent focus to the care delivered to our patients.”

The ‘NJR quality data provider’ certificate scheme is an initiative for hospitals to reach excellent standards relating to patient safety and to reward those who have met registry targets.

Tim Wilton, National Joint Registry medical director said: “Congratulations to colleagues at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

“The Quality Data Provider Award demonstrates the high standards being met towards ensuring compliance with the NJR and is often a reflection of strong departmental efforts to achieve such status.”
