Social Distance on the Road and Save Lives

Published September 29, 2020 By

THE two-metre rule has become part of everyday life since the coronavirus pandemic - but how many motorists know they should observe it when passing cyclists?

With many workers, students and school children back on the road post lock-down, Cleveland Road Safety Partnership are sending out a message to take extra care when travelling.

Not only are there the challenges of social distancing but also people may be opting for alternative modes of transport they are unfamiliar with, such as more people choosing to cycle.

Members of the partnership from Middlesbrough Council and Cleveland Fire Brigade came together for an event aimed at raising awareness of the passing distance recommendation.

They recommend that motorists leave 1.5m between their vehicle and a cyclist - leaving the person in the driving seat about 2m away.

The Chair of the Cleveland Road Safety Partnership Andy Corcoran said: "We are all road users, we can all be life savers.

"A moment's lapse in concentration, failing to look properly or travelling too fast can result in life changing consequences.

"We want everyone to take a little extra care and look out for each other as we share the roads.

"Each loss of life is a tragedy which has a massive ripple effect that impacts on individuals, families and communities."

Highlighting safe passing distances comes alongside additional safety messages seasonal challenges that the autumn and winter months present such as poor visibility both during the day and at night plus the potential for tricky road conditions in poor weather.

Every year incident statistics for injuries on the roads can see a spike because of these factors. Cyclists, powered two wheeler riders and pedestrians are particularly vulnerable because of their limited protection in an impact.

The Partnership is asking all road users to ensure that they stay as safe as possible as we move into autumn.

Anyone walking, running or cycling is reminded it is important that they make themselves as visible as possible and also avoid distraction from phones or music when crossing the road.

The partnership is also asking drivers to take time to give that second ‘life saver' look before taking a manoeuvre and also to watch their speed.
