The Town Hall event is being organised by Longlands & Beechwood ward Councillor Joan McTigue.

The civic reception is in recognition of any former servicemen who fought in the campaign – often referred to as the ‘forgotten army’.

The long-running campaign saw the forces of the British Empire and China, supported by the United States, arrayed against the invading forces of Japan, Thailand and India.

British land and air forces reached a peak of around 1,000,000 during the three-year conflict.

Cllr McTigue said: “These veterans have never been officially recognised here in our area, so this is our way of saying they have not been forgotten by us.

“Any Burma veterans will be 90 years of age or more by now, so may need to be accompanied by family members.

“We’d also like to invite the families of any servicemen who have died – sons, daughters or widows.”
