Middlesbrough Mela returns for 35th birthday bash

Published May 15, 2025 By

One of the highlights of the region’s cultural calendar celebrates its 35th birthday when it returns this summer.

The legendary Middlesbrough Mela – the longest running event of its kind in the UK – takes place over the weekend of Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17.

The ever-popular family-friendly event is expected to attract more than 50,000 people over the weekend.

Music, dance, fairground rides, street food, an international stall bazaar, interactive games and a whole host of children’s activities are all lined up for the event which is FREE to attend.

Acts for this year’s Mela are yet to be announced but organisers say there will be a few surprises in store.

The multi award-winning Mela is nationally recognised, and the organisers are currently seeking volunteers to join the team for this year’s event.

They are particularly interested in hearing from any photographers and videographers who are available to document the festival which may be showcased in future promotional marketing.

Councillor Philippa Storey, Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor and Executive member for Education & Culture, said: “Middlesbrough Mela is one of the jewels in the town’s crown, and is renowned as one of the very best events of its kind – not just regionally, but nationally and internationally.

“It’s the kind of reputation that enables it to attract the very best acts year after year, and why people keep coming back in their tens of thousands.

“This year’s special birthday edition promises to be bigger, louder, longer and more spectacular than ever before – why not get involved and help make the magic?”
