Work starts on cemetery extension and improvements

Published May 26, 2026 By

Work to extend and improve a Middlesbrough cemetery is now under way.

The project to extend Thorntree Cemetery will be completed by Autumn 2026.

It will make space for more graves so the cemetery can meet the needs of families for years to come. Other improvements will be made during the extension to make the cemetery a more welcoming place to visit.

Middlesbrough Council has written to families and will place notices in the affected areas to explain the changes.

Cllr Peter Gavigan, the Council’s Executive member for Environment and Sustainability, said the works were being planned with great care.

“We understand any disruption in the cemetery will cause inconvenience so we’re trying to give as much information as possible and work closely with families,” he said.

“This extension is vital so that people can continue to be buried in the cemetery in accordance with their wishes.”

The cemetery will stay open during the work but access will be restricted to some areas at certain times.

Existing graves won’t be disturbed during the works and memorials will not be affected.

Areas of land will be dug up and new drainage will be installed. New gates will be added and a fresh road layout will be introduced alongside new paths and parking areas.

Funeral services will continue to take place with work stopped as appropriate.
