Eston ASC Makes a Splash with First-Ever Level 4 Licensed Gala at New Eston Leisure Centre Pool

Eston Amateur Swimming Club (ASC) proudly announces the successful hosting of its first-ever Level 4 Licensed Swimming Gala on 3 June 2026 at the newly opened pool at Eston Leisure Centre, marking a landmark moment for both the club and the local community.

The event welcomed swimmers from neighbouring clubs and represented the first officially licensed competition hosted by Eston ASC at the new facility. The gala provided younger athletes seeking official qualifying times with an important opportunity to achieve recognised results and progress to higher-level competitions, while showcasing the exciting future of competitive swimming in Eston.

Club officials described the gala as a major milestone in the continued growth of Eston ASC and a significant step towards establishing the venue as a hub for competitive swimming in the area.

Eston ASC would like to extend it’s sincere thanks to title sponsor Highgrove Mortgages for its support in helping to deliver the gala and create opportunities for local swimmers to compete and progress within the sport.  Also a big thank you to Tees Million for donating money towards kit, medals and an annual trophy that will be handed out as part of the Club Championships.

The club also paid tribute to the hard work and determination of Phil Horner and many others connected with Eston ASC, whose long-standing efforts and discussions with the local council helped make the dream of bringing a swimming pool back to Eston a reality.

Following the event, club representatives said:

"This gala represents a huge moment for our club and community. Hosting a licensed event at our new home pool is something we are incredibly proud of, and the success of the day has given us great confidence for the future. We hope this is just the beginning of many successful competitions in Eston."

The success of the gala has strengthened the club's ambitions to establish an Open Gala later in the year and to provide even more competitive swimming opportunities for young athletes across the region.

Eston ASC would like to thank all swimmers, coaches, volunteers, officials, sponsors, families, and supporters whose efforts contributed to making the event such a success.

Eston ASC offers a free trial for anyone interested in swimming and can swim at Stage 5 or above in swimming lessons and can swim at least 25m and a knowledge of all strokes. More information can be found at our website www.estonasc.org.uk

To acknowledge World Asthma Day on May 7th, we are raising awareness of this important health issue by discussing fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing, a safe and easy method to help diagnose and manage asthma. FeNO testing measures inflammation of the airways, allowing doctors to provide better treatment for patients experiencing asthma symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath.

In the UK, over 8 million people, or approximately 12% of the population, have been diagnosed with asthma. However, some may have grown out of the condition, and 5.4 million people are receiving asthma treatment. Tragically, four people die every day because of asthma attacks, and a major study into asthma deaths (the National Review of Asthma Deaths) which looked at patient data from hospitals and GP practices, found that two-thirds of asthma deaths are preventable.

World Asthma Day serves as a reminder of the millions of people affected by this chronic respiratory condition, and the need for innovative solutions to improve patient care. FeNO testing aligns with this mission, offering a quick and non-invasive test to help patients receive a more accurate diagnosis and optimised treatment.

FeNO testing is suitable for patients as young as four years old, and the test is as simple as blowing bubbles through a straw into a drink. The testing process takes only 10 seconds for adults and six seconds for children, and the results are displayed on the testing device in less than two minutes. This revolutionary test could help patients reduce asthma symptoms and attacks, improving their treatment outcomes.

FeNO testing can be performed even by patients with reduced lung function, making it a versatile solution for individuals with varying levels of asthma severity. To ensure accurate results, patients should avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or engaging in strenuous exercise for at least one hour before the test.

This World Asthma Day, we encourage individuals to learn more about asthma management and the benefits of FeNO testing and more information can be found online at https://www.asthmaandlung.org.uk/
