Cut those Household Bills in Big Energy Saving Week

By Published January 17, 2019

CHECK, Switch and Save – that’s the message at a special event next week aimed at cutting household bills.

The free drop-in session at Middlesbrough Central Library on Wednesday, January 23 is part of Big Energy Saving Week which runs from Monday (January 21).

The national campaign is helping people cut their energy bills, raising awareness of how to save money by switching energy supplier or tariff, accessing discounts or grants, and making homes more energy efficient.

Local charity Middlesbrough Environment City is running the local event, offering residents free advice on comparing across the market to ensure they are not over-paying for energy.

As well as offering money saving advice, experts can also help people stay warm and healthy during the winter months.

Those attending are asked to bring along their latest energy bill to enable advisers to check if they could save money.

Alongside Middlesbrough Environment City, staff from Citizens Advice Middlesbrough will be on hand with information around debt and unclaimed benefits.

MEC Affordable Warmth Officer Amanda Megson said: “January is a difficult time for most people – it’s cold and money is tight so now is a perfect time to get to grips with those bills.

“Many people are over-paying for their gas and electricity and we are here to give free and independent advice to get people a better deal.

“There is no obligation to switch but it is important to look and see what is out there.

“Even if you are happy with your energy company, come along as there is something we can do for everyone - even if it is just a super-efficient LED light bulb!”

Advisers will assist with Warm Homes Discount applications and the Priority Services Register which can provide additional support to a wide range of people.

They can also check eligibility for boiler repair/replacement and insulation grants as well as onward referrals for benefit checks and wider debt advice.

  • Big Energy Saving Week runs from Monday, January 21 to Sunday, January 27.

Check, Switch and Save takes place at the Central Library on Wednesday, January 23 from 9.30am and 3pm.

Simply drop in, or to guarantee a one-to-one session with a trained adviser, book a slot in advance on Freephone 0800 304 7084.
