Ali’s Riverside Run Celebrates 10th Anniversary

By Published March 02, 2018

Runners from across Middlesbrough are being encouraged to tie up their trainers, put on their fitness gear and take part in one of the region’s best loved running events.

The Ali Brownlee Riverside Run, which is being organised by Middlesbrough Council in partnership with Everyone Active, is back for the 10th year in a row. The event will take place on Saturday 1st July and entries are now open for the 5km and 2km race.

The 5km race provides the ideal opportunity for runners to either take on their first road race, or try and beat their PB. Alternatively, people of all ages and abilities can enter the shorter 2km fun run, which is perfect for families.

Runners will pass some of Middlesbrough’s iconic sites including the Transporter Bridge, Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond’s monumental Temenos sculpture, finishing with a lap of the Riverside Stadiums pitch being cheered on by friends, relatives and the community.

Jimmy Wattis, Everyone Active’s events manager said: “We are delighted to be delivering the Ali Brownlee Riverside Run in partnership with Middlesbrough Council.

“We are committed to encouraging the local community to lead healthier, more active lifestyles and the event provides a great opportunity for everyone to get active this summer.”

Councillor Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member with responsibility for sports development, said: “The Riverside Run is a lasting tribute to a hugely popular character who symbolised everything that’s great about Middlesbrough.

“The event’s growing popularity is something of which he would have been enormously proud, and he continues to act as an inspiration to runners, walkers and charity fund-raisers of all ages.”
