Bulbs Galore in Councillor's Floral Gift to Ward

Published November 22, 2019 By

A SPLASH of springtime colour is on the cards for residents of a Middlesbrough ward.

Some 2,000 crocus bulbs will be planted across Longlands & Beechwood thanks to local Councillor Joan McTigue.

Cllr McTigue has enlisted the help of an army of young gardeners to help with the planting, and was joined at the weekend by six-year-old Olivia Debnath-Warren and her brother Logan, nine.

The bulbs - along with roses and other plants - were bought from Wilkinsons Landscapes in Eaglescliffe using Cllr McTigue's Special Responsibility Allowance (SRA).

She said: "The children came out in the rain to help me and that was very good of them - they'll be able to see the fruits of their hard work in the spring.

"We will be planting the crocuses under lamp posts, road signs etc and I have asked the Council not to spray those areas with weed killer, so hopefully they will bloom for some years to come.

"In addition to the bulbs I've also ordered 50 rose bushes with the first ten already planted.

"The Council kindly arranged with their supplier for me to have the same discount they get from their suppliers and I am grateful for that."

"I'm happy to put my SRA towards making the ward look colourful, inviting and looked after.

"I am also looking at areas where some trees can be planted."

Councillor Dennis McCabe, Middlesbrough Council's Executive member for Environment, said: "There's nothing like an array of colourful spring flowers to brighten up an area after a long dark winter.

"I applaud Cllr McTigue's initiative, and would hope to see similar schemes elsewhere in the borough."
