Pop Up Pride Event Coming to Orange Pip Market

By Published September 27, 2019

A POP Up Pride event will take place alongside this weekend's Orange Pip Market - and the full line-up of performances can now be revealed.

The Pop Up Pride event will take place in Middlesbrough town centre on Saturday, September 28 co-ordinated by Curious Arts who have organised the event in response to the community requests to have a Pride celebration in the Tees Valley.

It will involve a series of family friendly daytime events at Orange Pip Market and at other locations in the town.

The event celebrates the diversity of our communities and the organisers want to encourage everyone to come along and celebrate the richness of the LGBTQ community together.

Among the entertainment will be music, dancing, storytelling, theatrical performances and arts and crafts.

Phil Douglas of Curious Arts said: "I have previously led on pride events in Middlesbrough in the past but due to funding and other challenges an event hasn't happened for a few years.

"The Tees Valley's LGBTQ+ community deserve visibility and celebration, there are still a lot of negative perceptions and hate crime which is a real shame.

"This Pop Up Pride has a great line-up and the work I do with Curious Arts continue to strive to increase visibility, dialogue and understanding of the LGBTQ community through our programme of high quality accessible arts, come and join us at Orange Pip Market and our various venues!"

Cllr Mieka Smiles, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: "It might be the last Orange Pip for the season - but Pop Up Pride represents the kind of exciting elements that we hope to include at the market going forward.

"It's going to be an amazing Orange Pip finale for 2019 and I encourage young and old to come along, join in and celebrate our amazing diversity."
