Mela Heading ‘Home’ to Albert Park for 2018

Published March 06, 2018 By

MIDDLESBROUGH’S Mela has a new team – and their first decision is to take the multicultural extravaganza home for 2018.

Now in its 28th year, Mela will be hosted in Albert Park instead of Centre Square for the first time in seven years with work set to start this summer on the city centre Grade A office development.

The event will take place this year on Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12.

Mela now has a new committee led by co-chairs Naveed Hussain and Zafar Uddin who both serve as councillors on Middlesbrough Council.

Naveed said: “Middlesbrough Mela is back for its 28th year and coming back to its home of Albert Park.

“Albert Park will bring back wonderful memories for many of our audience who have grown up with the event taking place in the beautiful Victorian park.

“With great support out from Middlesbrough Council, we’re once again looking forward to a fantastic celebration of multicultural music, food, fashion and art.

“We now have an exciting challenge ahead of us, but I am confident we can look forward to welcoming record crowds again.”

Joining Naveed and Zafar in the new committee, are Secretary Linda Lewis, Treasurer Kash Patel and fellow new members Matt Storey, Junior Masandi, Beverley Bodden, James Beighton and Navdeep Murbay.

Kash added: “Middlesbrough Mela’s heritage dates back many years and after a 6 year break from Albert Park, I’m delighted to see it return there. As stage manager I feel the park is a fantastic venue for live performers as acoustically it provides a great atmosphere.”

The committee are now looking for sponsors, supporters and stall holders for this year’s event. Anyone interested in helping should contact Leanne Littlewood from Middlesbrough Council via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
