Middlesbrough and Stockton MIND have received a £5,000 donation after families gave consent for the recycling of metals resulting from cremation.
The recycling scheme is part of a national programme organised by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.
Recycled metals include those used in the construction of the coffin and in orthopaedic implants such as hip, knee and replacement joints.
Cllr Tracy Harvey, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Commercial Services, attended the charity’s Teesside headquarters on Lothian Road in Middlesbrough to present the cheque.
She said: “MIND do great work in Middlesbrough and across Teesside and we are delighted to be able to support them with this donation.
“We want to say thank you to families across Teesside who have made this possible by giving their consent for metals to be recycled in this way.
“Their generosity will go some way to helping those in need of support due to emotional or mental health difficulties – as well as their families. MIND is a very worthy recipient of this donation.”
Emma Howitt, Chief Executive of Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind, said: “We really welcome this thoughtful donation which will help us prevent people from having to go through mental health issues alone.”
In previous years the scheme has raised thousands of pounds for Alzheimers Research UK, Dementia Friendly Middlesbrough and for the Teesside branch of Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, Butterwick Hospice, Teesside Hospice and Zoe’s Place.
