Praise for ‘one in a trillion’ social workers during awareness week

Published March 20, 2025 By

Social workers in Middlesbrough have been praised for the vital work they do to improve lives in the town.

Staff have come together for learning and development events to mark Social Work Week, which started on Monday.

As part of the events, children’s social workers enjoyed a presentation of positive feedback from the people they work with.

One social worker, Jane Barella, was proud to see a compliment from a family she works with included.

The message included the line: “Thank you for everything you have done for me and my mam. We appreciate every minute.”

Jane said: “It’s rewarding to be reminded that people appreciate the work we do. Our profession is all about developing trust and an understanding with the families.

“We just want the best for them and it’s lovely to get positive feedback.”

There was praise too for Donna Bradwell with a resident commenting: “This comes from the bottom of my heart and I genuinely, truly mean this: you are the best, and I mean the best social worker we have ever had. Thank you for everything you do for us. You are one in a trillion.”

John Shaw was described as “amazing” “The kids love him,” the feedback read. “He listens to them, understands them and shows he cares.”

Cllr Luke Henman, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Children’s Services, attended a celebration event on Monday.

He said: “Our social workers do incredibly important and often difficult work day in, day out.

“It was inspiring to read some of the compliments given by families to our staff and to hear from staff themselves about the work they do to support families.

“Middlesbrough Council’s Children’s Services has been on a rapid improvement journey that’s been recognised by Ofsted and the Department for Education. The passion of our staff to learn, improve and innovate really
shines through.

“We have strong leaders and committed staff who get excellent training and support and take great pride in making a difference to people’s lives.”

Middlesbrough Council is currently recruiting social workers to join its teams in both adult and children’s social care. The vacancies can be found online here: https://www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/careers-and-job-opportunities/vacancies/.

Here at CVFM we welcomed Karen Grainger and Ruth Musica from the social care team at Middlesbrough Council in for a chat to shine a light on the work that they do: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7rND6mwnOMnObBIvSBoas8?si=e33ad4a24c5d4dd2
