More than 50 students from across the UK will be coming together from Monday 22 July to Friday 26 July to learn and interact with the trust’s diverse workforce – inspiring them to become the next generation of doctors.
The ‘I Want to be a Doctor’ course commenced in 2017 as a partnership between South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Social Mobility Foundation – to support high-achieving students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
It is aimed at 16 to 17-year-olds and offers them a unique insight into the life of being a healthcare professional.
Previous editions have seen budding pupils learn more about the roles of staff from various professions and interact with them – helping these youngsters acquire behind-the-scenes knowledge of a busy acute hospital trust.
The week-long course will consist of several innovative and interactive sessions such as observing a live ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgery through a video link whilst getting an opportunity to ask questions to the operating ENT consultant.
Students can also look forward to getting involved in learning clinical skills such as paediatric resuscitation, body painting and interactive radiology sessions, and mastering communication techniques to help them prepare for future interviews.
Moreover, the mental health team from Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust will also be present, which will include psychiatrists and service users, and they will also be engaging with students to give them a glimpse of their careers.
Senior clinical lecturer Joanne Carling said: “Staff working across South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation and Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trusts are looking forward to welcoming 50 bright and aspiring young people from the Social Mobility Foundation.
“The fun, engaging and educational-packed residential week will see consultants, junior doctors, clinical lecturers and administrative staff collaborating together to plan a weeklong interactive programme – in the hopes of inspiring and developing the brightest minds to become our next generation of doctors.”
